I'll just throw my two denarii in on this one: I will always pronounce Latin like it's English, not just in isolated names in an English text, but in full Latin text. "Oh, for tuna, vee lut loona, stay tew very a-BILL-is!"

Couldn't they try catching fish? Before I killed and ate a fellow crew member, I'd be casting a line. It is said sharks would follow a ship because garbage was thrown overboard. Even a small shark would make at least one meal. Drawing lots for canibalism really blows my mind!!

Does anyone know if that congressional hearing about the sandwich incident was recorded in any way? Video/audio/transcript? It sounds really funny and I want to see what they said in it, but I can't seem to find anything when I google for it. I just find articles talking about the event occurring, but nothing more specific than that.

I read, somewhile back, that lard makes for chips (french fries) that are not greasy on the inside. Something to do with the lard molecules being bigger than the potato molecules, hence fat absorption is minimal. Whereas vegetable oils, having smaller molecules, can penetrate the potato molecule, maximising fat absorption. I'm pretty sure that's what was stated but that's all I remember as this was many years ago and the site is no longer there. I don’t know if it's true of other animal fats. Only problem is lard stinks even more than vegetable oil when you're deep frying in it. Not a fan of frying for this reason.

For anyone else wondering: It is not that uncommon for Soviet culture, though it is sometimes perceived as a commoner and a peasant thing - raw pre-cut onions are served with fish, raw pre-cut lemons added in tea, and in common farmer household nothing goes to waste, that is why after squeezing lemon in tea some people eat the leftover lemon, sometimes just pulp, sometimes peel and zest too. Eating fresh raw fruits and veggies are healthy (vitamin C and all) If I tried to interpret those odd gifts, I would say those were offerings of something common, something that is simple. A reminder of life as it is on Earth. Patsayev and his crew divided the onion and the lemon into three parts and, I guess, indeed ate them raw. All we can find is in brief comments about it between the crew and ground control. Unfortunately, the cosmonauts did not survive the landing to tell the story. As far as I can tell, the tragedy wasn’t caused by leftover lemon or something, but I do like the story. I find it bittersweet, to be honest, mostly because the end, but these were truly simple but thoughtful gifts from home, from Earth!

It reminds me of the Christmas truce in Flanders where British and German troops exchanged rations and played football. The top brass were furious and forbade any such fraternisation again. They couldn’t have us plebs working out that the guy in the other trench is more like me than the guy in the chateau ordering me to die.
